Music from the Soul

I watched the Buena Vista Social Club tonight and had one of those total emotional experiences that a certain kind of music creates and that real artists produce. The musicians weren't trying to impress, but obviously played for their mutual enjoyment.    And I as the listener got caught up with them.  No commercialism here.  Some of the musicians were in their 80s and 90s when the film was made (1998).  It is so rare in our multi-tasking society to find people whose whole life consists of one passion, in this case, music.  A Cuba that looks destitute by American standards, when seen through the Cuban music, becomes transformed.  Perhaps it was a romanticized view, but the people are remarkable in finding the joyful essence of their life, totally devoid of materialism.  Who would believe it?
