The Things They Carried is a collection of related stories by Tom O'Brien, about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. Originally published in 1990, and apparently based on O'Brien's own experience, the title page calls it "a work of fiction". The Things They Carried was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
"Since it was first published, The Things They Carried has become an unparalleled Vietnam testament, a classic work of American literature and a profound study of men at war that illuminates the capacity, and the limits, of the human heart and soul".
