I don't get it. At what point will the sports world (franchises, fans and owners) stand up and say "ENOUGH". We have players using drugs, beating their wives and dogs, getting arrested and lo and behold...they're back in the game. I think it started with John McEnroe and his juvenile tantrums that should have been stopped then. It's gone on and on. Now, France, with their soccer team storming off a field and today yet another tennis player actually spitting at fans and walking off the court. I say ENOUGH!! Forget fines....these sports figur

I was up early on Sunday to put my flag out (Sunday actually was Memorial Day even though everyone was off from school and work on Monday). As the day wore on, I would occasionally walk out to see how my neighborhood was remembering this day. Sad to say, my flag flew alone. It can't be a generational thing because many of my neighbors are old enough to have served in Korea and Viet Nam. These are the same people who had flags plastered on windows and cars after 9/11. Is that what it takes to remember and honor the men and women who have served and/or died for our

Well, the 2010 Blogathon is coming to an end. I want to thank all of you at OATS (especially my beautiful daughter, Barbara) for giving us a place to vent, brag, complain and just have a good time talking (writing) into the ether. Thanks also, to my granddaughter, Asia, for sponsoring me this year. There is a great need for an organization such as yours. The work you do is wonderful and, as I've said before, we could really use you down here in sunny Florida. Every time I stop at the library, every computer is occupied by seniors. The thirst for

Has anyone else noticed that everything we buy in grocery stores is smaller? I remember the first time I became aware of it. It was during the 'supposed' shortage of coffee. The prices were through the roof and people were drinking more tea. Then the prices came down a bit, but coffee was no longer in 1 lb.

I'm dedicating this blog to my friend Karola. Karola is an English citizen who, due to the cold weather in England, prefers to be in Florida. Some years ago, her son, a wealthy businessman in England, bought her a villa where I live. She would come here and stay for most of the year, leaving for England several times a year to see her children and grandchildren and to satisfy the requirements of her visa. Now this is where it gets stupid. She does not get Soc.

The big news today on TV seems to be that the public doesn't want straight people portraying gay people and/or vice versa. Now think about this.....Broadway has had gays on stage forever. Did anyone care? NO. Hollywood had gays portraying straight people and straight people portrayed gays. Did anyone care?

I turn on my TV and instead of finding out when our economy is going to improve or our young men and women are going to come home from war and resume their lives, we find out that Paris Hilton needs friends in England and Lindsay Lohan's parents are upset with her. Jessie James and Tiger Woods are poor victims of a sex addiction (but are still raking in millions). We say that our children need good role models and yet we don't put their faces and stories on the cover of magazines. I remember cancelling a subscription to

Many of my neighbors joined Farmville on Facebook and finally convinced me to participate. Little did I know that it would become a full time job. Harvesting, planting, caring for animals and building barns, homes and, yes, even a palatial estate. I've been doing this for a few months now and it seems I have a very successful farm. The best part are the other farmers. I've been 'friended' by people in Norway, Turkey, Italy, Spain, England, Canada and Colombia. There are almost as many men 'farming' as

I remember my mother saying that when she looked in the mirror, she still saw the young woman she was at 19. I should have paid more attention, because it happens to me all the time. when i sit before the mirror and put makeup on, i don't see the 'elderly' woman i've become. while i know i don't look 19, (or even 40) i can't believe that by the end of the year i will be 73. that was hard to write. i'm still friends with all my girlfriends from back then and the same thing happens when i look at them. we've each had terrible tragedies in our lives that h

A born and bred New Yorker, I moved to Florida when I retired. It seems as if everyone here is from somewhere else but the one thing we have in common is our age. One of the things I've noticed is the amount of activities available for seniors. If you're in a Senior Community, there are buses to take you to all the stores, museums, senior centers and of course, the casino. There are evening classes in every high school, and for a nominal fee, you can learn a new language, stretch your body to yoga, or master the computer. This may be "God's Waiting Room", but you can really have a good time while you're waiting.
