Brooklyn Botanic Garden's cherry trees flower in spring every year. To celebrate the new flowers and the new season, New York's Japanese community gathers to dance to the sound of flutes and Taiko drumming and to enjoy Japanese classical dance and folk music, tea ceremonies and traditional food. The national flower in Japan, where it grows wild throughout the country as well as being widely cultivated in cities, the blossom is believed to symbolize the life of the samurai which, like the flower, is short-lived.
